AS a massive fan of all Tameside's non-league clubs it was with a heavy
heart I made my way home from Ewen Fields last night (Monday).
The atmosphere of exasperation and frustration coupled with the outpouring of outright anger from the Hyde fans was something I have not experienced in 50 years of watching our local teams.
This was not the Hyde I know. This was a Hyde in serious, serious, trouble.
During the opening 15 minutes, the Tigers looked champs not chumps, creating chances, the passing was crisp and precise and there was plenty of movement off the ball.
Then sloppy defending, a simple goal and once again they were staring down the barrel of a gun. The Hyde confidence melted as quickly as an ice cube on a summer's day in Benidorm.
A ray of hope, a penalty. Body language predicted a miss. Seconds later the prediction came true. An awful attempt.
The rest of the game was pretty much a non-event.
I don't honestly think Hyde are THAT bad. What they don't have is any sense of belief, and, who can blame them, confidence. And when you are down in the dumps, Lady Luck never comes knocking on your door.
Then the fans turned, and how nastily they turned. Manager McNiven must have the hide of rhino to shirk off that kind of abuse.
Personally I felt sorry for the chap. I am in no doubt he does his best. But
as the records show, he simply cannot cut it.
Launch a Save the Tigers campaign NOW before this great club becomes extinct. That it should be in this position is a disgrace and an embarrassment to its proud heritage.
